Metro Radio & Magic 1152’s Cash for Kids are raising money for St Oswald’s Hospice, this July – August we are aiming to raise £35,000 to help children and young people who are not expected to live to reach adulthood.

The money we raise together will help support St Oswald’s, making a significant difference to children and families in this area.

St Oswald’s Hospice supports children and families who are suffering life limiting and life threatening illnesses.  Some of these children will die when they are very young, others will deteriorate slowly over a number of years – ALL of these children deserve to be given the best possible care to ease there final days and give a little joy back into their lives.

“It is every parent’s worst nightmare to be told their child will die before them.”

We need you all to support us to give these children the specialist residential short break service and care – and access to all the things our children take for granted.  We need to create a space which is a ‘home from home’ for these children, where they can socialise and be with others who are dealing with similar illnesses.

One of the big activities we are organising is the Woodland Walk & Family Fun Day on Sunday 8th August 11am-4pm at Newcastle Racecourse – a 2 mile sponsored walk with fun family activities please register to take part.

Some Image

This area is heavily used, as it has PC’s, game stations and a music system.
However, the area is decorated and furnished in the same way as the rest of the building and not designed specifically for the young people.  A bright, youthful décor and furniture has been requested by the teenagers using our service for some time now.

Some ImageQuestionnaires and informal conversations with parents and children who use the service have confirmed our team’s view that the entrance to our unit currently looks quite clinical.   We would like to brighten up this area and make them more user friendly.

Some ImageWe currently use equipment that was donated when the department was first opened. We do not have enough equipment for each room, so children who would like to listen to music  have to wait for a nurse or helper to source a portable CD player / MP3 speaker and plug it in for them.  A multi-room system will allow the children to select and listen to their own music in their bedrooms.

Some ImageOur staff have observed some of the children using this piece of equipment at school.  It enables those children with very little voluntary movement to take some control in the choices they have e.g.to turn on their favourite TV programme, switch on their music or activate a toy. Additional accessories are designed to provide sensory stimulation to the children.

Some ImageOur physiotherapists have requested a heated water mattress which will be suitable for use in our sensory room.  This specialist softplay bed will ensure that the children are comfortable, relaxed and properly supported whilst they enjoy the varied sensory stimulation which our room offers.

Some ImageOver the past few months we’ve had a number of new referrals of infant/toddler age and we now need an additional purpose-built cot to be able to adequately meet this demand.
